Metabolism

Concept Explanation

Metabolism

large number of chemical reactions take place within an organism's cells. Collectively, these reactions are known as metabolism - the chemical processes that maintain life and allows an organism to grow and reproduce, maintain its structure and respond to its environment.

The chemical reactions of metabolism are divided into two groups :-

  • Reaction that break down organic matter - Examples are cellular respiration, which breaks down the glucose molecules to release energy, and the  breakdown of wastes into  harmless substances for excretion.
  • Reactions that build complex molecules from simpler substances - An example is the construction of new cells and cell components such as proteins and genetic material.
